Dear Brother

John and myself were upon the point of setting off to hear Dr. Caldwell & Holly spout latin & move over to see your new black coat, but were prevented by sickness in the Clark family - The Old Parsons fast day was one day too late, the rain anticipated all his prayer However Heaven knew his wants & gave him more than he could ask in thanks, as uncle Howard would say James appears quite happy and is not the least troublesome for his habbits are entirely changed, he acts more like a man of 20 than a boy of 9 years old--He reads a great deal & diverts us every day with his wit. He caught a Rabbit a few days a go which gave him real pleasure. John & him sleep together in our room, -- Betsey thanks you for the pains you have taken with her little matters. The crape (canton) was not the kind she wished but will not return it provided you could procure her 5 yards more of the same which will make a dress. The kind She wanted 3 yards of was a Thin kind of French mourning Crape such as ladies make cuffs of & dress their Bonnets with none can be procured in this town-- I send a sample, a specimen I should have said - also 4 pair of ladies worsted Stockings black as possible are wanted - What trouble we give you but If you were married we would apply to -- Mrs B-- So you know how to escape-- I have just received a long letter from Jane Craighead--all well. James studying law with Thomas - 14 boarders at home 28 schollars - a new porch - a fine new bedstead and sundry other improvements - [illegible] but no husband. come down soon & see us --- at all events on Monday or weeks -
