Carlisle, Nov 16 1822
My beloved sister
I hardly know how to communicate the purpose of this letter-Our beloved James was taken with an inflammatory bilious fever on the evening of the 5th ins. and while we were every day hoping, it would yield to medical treatment on the day before yesterday it ran into typhus - And to day at a ¼ before two, our sweet James breathed his last__ this a very heavy stroke, my sister, but what shall we say. It is the Lord__I bow to his holy will. His covenant and promise stand sure. "I will be thy God, and the God of thy sees." -I believe his word I have comfort in my childs end. Pray for your afflicted brother
