Scope & Content |
Letter from Mason Brown (New Haven, CT) to Samuel Brown (Philadelphia, PA). Mason discusses travel plans for he and his brother Orlando and his joy to be in Orlando's company. He also discusses exams at Yale and Professor Silliman's Journal of which Samuel has wrote a notice to be included within. Mason also mentions that John Brown is selling land. [Transcription] New Haven, April 25th, 1819 Dear Uncle, I am at present favored with a few spare moments and have determined to employ them in writing you a few lines. Orlando arrived in this place several days ago, and will remain in Connecticut until our vacation commences (8 days) when I shall accompany him to New York and probably to Princeton. I am as yet uncertain whether I shall be able to proceed as far as Philadelphia or not, but if possible I shall pay you a visit, as nothing could be more gratifying than an interview with yourself and my cousins. If I do visit Philadelphia during the present vacation I shall arrive there about the last of next month. Our examination has just commenced, and consequently there is but little mirth in college; I nevertheless enjoy excellent spirits in consequence of Orlando's company. I received a letter from my mother this morning, in which she informs me that all our relatives are well, and that it is doubtful at what period they will commence their contemplated journey. Father has not yet returned for the purpose of disposing of some land. Mrs. Tubman and her sister Caroline will be in New York during the ensuing month, and I anticipate much pleasure from meeting with them. Landon is still at Farmington busily engaged at his studies. Remember me affectionately to my amiable little cousins, excuse this short scrawl and believe me to remain Your affectionate Nephew, Mason Brown Dr. Samuel Brown P.S. Mrs. Silliman had the notice you sent him inserted in the last number of his Journal, and "will insert with pleasure any future communications, you may honor him with," [Address Block] Doctor Saml Brown, Philadelphia, Pen [Postmark] New Haven Apr 26 |
