1884 Mary Mason Scott to Mary Yoder Brown Scott |
Scope & Content |
Undated letter fragment from Mary Mason Scott to her mother Mary Yoder Brown Scott. Mary Mason is writing from Old Point Comfort, VA where she is staying we her Aunt Eliza (Lylie) Baily and Joe Baily for the Christmas holiday. [Transcription] [Page] very presentable. I know where any money has gone every cent of it. Doesn't money fly? Do you want me to send you an account of what I have spent or not- I am glad I came here for xmas. I don't think the girls at the school will have a good time. After seeing all of the stores and those I have been and got to the theatre that will be all. Louise Tood has a plan which she is trying to carry out- of making up a party and getting a lady she knows in [illegible] to chaperone it. They will go to West Point and stay several days at the hotel. Then rent a house in the country to spend the rest of the time. Did you ever hear of such an absurd [illegible] And aren't girls silly? Miss Fitzgerald left the same day that I did. [Page] The [illegible] some thought. There should be only the five, hearing, seeing, feeling, smelling and tasting others thought. There should be more for under which of those does the sensation of fatigue , come heat and cold come, it is not by feeling for that is needed with the organ of touch. Miss Brown allowed us to reason it out among ourselves and we decided at last-there were more than five. I decided to study physiology because I did not finish it at Mr. Stevens. Did you know that Prof. Ghuisous (?) the music teacher was a pupil of Thalberg. I think he is a splendid teacher and have learned a great deal in the last month. Not only to play the pieces that I am taking now but knowledge that will last one always. So much for studies now for other things. [Page] As our drawers are liable to be looked into by the teachers any day. They have to be always in order. Then as there is to one I decided for me I have to decide for myself and am no longer "a willowy wand" but self-reliant. Whoever lives in the house with Madame has excellent lessons in fact- for when you wish a favor you must ask her at the right moment. Then if I had staid at home I would certainly never have read Ezekial in French. Our economy does not prosper. My napkin ring after being the admiration of the table suddenly became dim. I have grave doubts that it is not tarnish. Litter was right about my cloak. It is as nice as a sealskin and has stood a severe test. The day before I left for [Page] Old Point was considered one of New York's colder days. I was out all afternoon and was not cold at all. And was perfectly comfortable on the way down. I don't think I was ever better in my life. I never get cold. Let's don't either of us think of the long time before I come home. And it will pass quicker. I have been trying to keep my accounts straight. And although a [illegible] book does not book look. She packed her own trunk. Mary, the servant girl packed mine and packet it beautifully. The "Knox hat" came safely. I gave back of the servant $1.00 for Christmas. These of course they [illegible] as my departure. Madame gave me the money for the journey with many instructions not to lose it and to be on my good behavior so that my Aunt would see how much I have improved. Everyone here thinks that I am a great deal fatter and really my dresses are "popping tight." The cherry dress has finished in time for me to bring with me. It is beautiful and fits like a glove. So now we need I think Mr. More and clothes for the rest of the year. It is very quiet here now, all of the [illegible] except me have gone away, so there is no gaiety. But I miss [illegible] Aunt Lylie and Dr. Baily. She staying in bed in the morning and going to bed late at night and the petting oh so much. Everyone is so glad to see me that it is next to going home. Aunt Lylie and I don't dare talk of E. Mac (?) at home. Merry Xmas my dear dear Mamma, Aunt Margaretta and the boys. I love you so much.
