Mary was a slave at Liberty Hall. She was the daughter of Miles and Hannah Stepney who were also slaves at Liberty Hall. Margaretta Brown taught Mary and referred to her as "a great scholar." Mary also accompanied John and Margaretta Brown on their last trip to New York in 1836. Mary was manumitted (freed) by John Brown in his 1836 will. She was to be freed when she was 25 years old. He left her a room and furniture at Liberty Hall. |
