Paul Sawyier, Hord Brown, and Sam Brown (from left to right) |
Description |
Tintype photograph of three men. The tintype is framed in a paper mat. A handwritten note on the back reads: "Paul Sawyier, Hord Brown, Sam Brown, Coney Island, Sunday June 3, 1900." Paul Sawyier (1865-1917), a Frankfort, Kentucky artist, was friends with several of Orlando Brown's grandsons: Mason P. Brown (1873-1941), Hord Brown (1871-1909) and Sam Brown (1875-1926). Mason purchased Sawyier's works and was a pallbearer at Sawyier's interment at the Frankfort Cemetery. Hord and Sam are pictured with Sawyier in this tintype produced June 3, 1900, in Coney Island, New York. It is possible that the three men traveled together to New York from Kentucky, or the Brown brothers could have met Sawyier in New York, as his two sisters lived there. Sawyier left Kentucky in 1913 to live permanently in New York State. |
