High contrast photograph of the front door of Liberty Hall. The artist's signature and date is written in pencil in the lower-right-hand corner, on the mat board. The date is in Chinese. Paul Briol (1889-1969) was an American photographer based in Cincinnati. He studied with a Chinese scholar when he lived in New Orleans and signed and dated his originals with the date in Chinese. Briol often overlapped 2 negatives when printing in the darkroom to get more dramatic light. He enhanced some of his photographs in this way. |
