Description |
One of a set of six fancy chairs. The front legs are vase turned with three bands at top and one band in middle. Front legs end in button feet. Back legs are turned and tapered and are connected to stiles. There are five stretchers and one painted panel between front legs. Seat is original rush, painted brown in wood frame with round moulding on front. Stiles are flat on front and rounded at rear. There are seven turned rings at bottom of each stile. Between stiles are three trapezoidal panels decreasing in size from top to bottom. All chairs are painted, there are 3 layers of paint. The first is a gray primer followed by an imitation mahogany graining finish (dark maroon paint over a salmon-colored base coat), with select areas painted chrome yellow and gilt with real gold leaf, followed by a varnish overall. Second is the present graining on the chair. It consists of an off-white primer and woodgraining finish (thin red-brown glaze over a yellow base coat). Gold leaf and black detailing were applied over the graining, followed by a varnish overall. Third is the present gold and black striping that was applied over the extant second generation finish. The first layer was applied ca. 1815, the second layer was applied in 1874 or later, it is unclear when the third was applied. |
