Black and white print of a group of four dogs and three puppies. Entitled: The Poor Relations. The text below the image reads: "Painted by James H. Beard" and " Engraved by Alfred Jones." Under the title, it reads: "From the original painting distributed by the Western Art Union, printed exclusively for the members of that year 1848" The Western Art Union was founded in Cincinnati in 1847 to promote local artists. The structure of the organization was based on that of the American Art Union with engravings issued as a benefit for membership. |
